Eagles for Veterans (EFV) carves large Eagles in the patriotic style of the famous 19th century Maine wood carver, John Haley Bellamy (b-1836/d-1914). We then donate them free of any costs or obligations to Veteran Organizations in Maine and around the country. We are also committed to offer training in the handcrafting of these Bellamy style Eagles. Our purpose here is to support any woodcarver who wishes to develop their skillset in creating these wonderful examples of New England Folk Art.
The instruction is offered by our Founder, James McCain, in his workshop in Portland, Maine.
There is no cost for this training, although depending on the individual’s inventory of carving tools, there may be some expense in acquiring additional carving gouges. During the training itself the student can work with the personal tooling of the instructor. The amount of time required to carve a Bellamy style Eagle that is 5 foot long (wingtip to wingtip and without crossed flags), is approximately 60 hours. This time can be divided into as many days or parts of days as is convenient to both the student and instructor.
Our current student, Mark Reynolds, is in the shop several days per week for 2.5 hours per day. As you can see in the featured photo, he is making great progress!
